TR Cutler Looks at Manufacturers and Mental Health During COVID-19

Manufacturing journalist TR Cutler is authoring a series of articles about the mental health issues facing manufacturers during COVID-19, racial discrimination, and economic anxiety. Many people are experiencing an increased amount of stress and anxiety because of the crises.

A recent Kaiser Family Foundation study found that nearly half of Americans believe COVID-19 has had a negative impact on their mental health, and numerous mental health agencies have reported surges in requests for help. Manufacturers need to do what is right for their employees and customers. Part of the brand strategy must focus on easing emotional distress.

Cutler is going to review how manufacturers can give employees and consumers tips for taking a mental break, offering advice for coping and relaxation strategies. More manufacturers are encouraging hobbies like cooking or gardening and reminding workers about the importance of self-care.

Mental Health America published the results of an extensive research project that analyzed the mental health scores of 19 industries within the U.S. Manufacturing ranked within the bottom 10% of industries with a subpar mental health score.

Manufacturing employees face a unique combination of pressures that can contribute to high levels of stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Even before COVID-19 the success of manufacturing labor is determined by productivity, efficiency, and output, requiring long hours and shift-based schedules that allow little if any time for flexibility or recovery. These jobs also tend to be physically demanding, repetitive, and even dangerous. Add COVID-19 mental health into those factors and a recipe for serious consequences cannot be over-estimated.
