Cross-laminated timber (CLT) was first introduced in the early 1990s in Europe. Since then, it has been widely used in the construction of residential and commercial buildings in the region. This can be accredited to the advantages offered by CLT, which include durability, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Apart from this, as it is manufactured by gluing multiple layers of solid-sawn lumber, the process provides high structural strength and dimensional rigidity, increases the splitting resistance of the product and results in a lower environmental impact.

European Cross-Laminated Timber Market Trends:
At present, there is a rise in the demand for CLT in Europe as it is a sustainable material and aids in sequestering the carbon dioxide (CO2) present in the environment. Apart from this, it is considered as an alternative to concrete, steel and masonry in various applications. Besides this, initiatives by various regional and international organizations for encouraging the development of green buildings are further driving the demand for CLT. For instance, the European Regional Network (ERN), a part of the World Green Building Council, is a community of over 4’600 members across Europe. It is continuously working toward raising awareness, building skills and capacity, providing financial and economic incentives, and helping create favorable policies and regulations for promoting sustainable construction in the region.
Note: We are regularly tracking the direct effect of COVID-19 on the market, along with the indirect influence of associated industries. These observations will be integrated into the report.
