International Medical Aid, which was founded by Johns Hopkins alumni, has led the way in bringing healthcare where it otherwise might not go, raising lives and offering valuable shadowing and study abroad experiences to pre-health students.

The International Medical Aid (IMA) has led the charge in providing a once-in-a-lifetime medical internship abroad for doctors, medical residents, medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pre-med undergraduates to work in busy international hospitals.

IMA’s most recent Fall 2021 cohort has successfully completed its internships in East Africa.

“One of the perks of an internship abroad is immersing yourself in a new culture through exploring the local sight-seeing adventures of the host country. IMA ensures that all our interns visit many of the must-see spots in each of our program destinations,” a representative said in a statement.

Kristen Dean, a Summer 2021 alumna who accomplished her internship in Kenya, said the program allowed her to grow in many ways as an individual and a future healthcare provider.

“Through observing all aspects of Kenyan life at the hospital and coming in contact with an array of people, my lens for the world has widened dramatically,” Kristen wrote.

She says the internship has provided her insight into the multi-pronged approach to healthcare through the hygiene education sessions, community medical clinics, and the shadowing program at the hospital.

“I am eternally grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore and devote myself to my enduring passion for medicine,” Kristen adds.

On the other hand, Sara Price, a Summer 2021 alumna as well, said IMA offered her an experience that ultimately changed her life forever.

“From the local outreach programs to the rotations in the hospital – IMA offered me the most beneficial learning opportunity I could have ever asked for. From the amazing staff to the luxurious living, and especially the knowledge I gained during my stay, Kenya and IMA will forever have a piece of my heart with them, wherever my life decides to take me,” Sara wrote.

Founded by Johns Hopkins alumni, International Medical Aid works with pre-health students across multiple disciplines, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, mental health, and physical therapy, to provide experiences that will further their preparation for medical school and graduate healthcare programs.

In IMA’s healthcare internship program, medical students and pre-med undergraduates are mentored by its outstanding staff of dedicated physicians and other healthcare professionals. The organization collaborates with an extensive network of public and private hospitals to offer rewarding, hands-on courses tailored to the specific skill sets and educational backgrounds of every intern.

IMA offers electives abroad, nursing opportunities, medical internship abroad programs, pre-dentistry experiences, physician shadowing abroad, and pre-med volunteering. IMA is globally known as an ethical leader in international volunteer programs and serves as a significant alternative to for-profit organizations.

IMA works with underserved communities in East Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. It brings healthcare where it otherwise might not go, improving lives and offering valuable shadowing experiences to pre-health students. The organization focuses its efforts on areas where there is the greatest need.
