Manufacturing Outlook Current Issue Looks at Impacts of Ukrainian War as Reported by Industrial Journalist TR Cutler

Industrial journalist TR Cutler recently discussed the impacts of the Ukrainian ware on the African continent. Cutler reported the kind of collateral damage experienced in Africa. Read the full article in the April issue of Manufacturing Outlook magazine.

Cutler noted that farmers must brace themselves for tough times ahead given the spike in the price of fertilizer which will only get worse and many common commodities that Kenya imports from Ukraine and Russia will no longer be available.

Wheat will also be in short supply; Kenya imports wheat worth $140M from Russia in 2020 and another $9M from Ukraine.  While some parts of Kenya plant wheat, used in the preparation of bread, the country often faces deficits given the change in climate and the ever-increasing demand for wheatby industries and Kenyans.  Similarly, maize is one of the products that dominate cereal imports from the two countries with the majority of the maize flour exported by Russia (estimated at $9M).

Additional collateral damage to the unnecessary conflict is steel as both Ukraine and Russia are dominant exporters of iron sheets to Kenya. Kenya imported iron sheets and steel worth nearly $120M billion from Russia and another $40M from Ukraine. According to the global trade data, iron sheets are the second-largest imports of Kenya from Russia after cereals.
