When the pandemic started, a lot of businesses, establishments, and institutions had to shut down. Because of this, working and learning from home became necessary. For many fortunate individuals and families, the transition from going to the office or going to school is less challenging than for some others, mainly because they already have the necessary tools to make it possible: access to the internet and computing devices such as laptops and tablets.
The pandemic exposed the disparity between low-income and high-income households. Fortunately, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) established the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) which provides low-income families discounted or free internet to help them stay connected during the pandemic. Leading service provider Maxsip is one of the telecommunications companies participating in the ACP through its affiliate Get Connected Free.
The program is available to households that have incomes at or below 135% of the Federal Policy Guidelines or has a household member that participates in at least one of the following: SNAP or food stamps, Lifeline, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit. For households with students, they are qualified if they are approved for the free and reduced-price school lunch or breakfast program. Those who lost their job or were furloughed since February 20, 2020, are also eligible, along with those who have received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.
With Get Connected Free, households can rest easy knowing that the monthly internet service is one hundred percent free when they sign up for and stay on the program. “While some companies only offer a discount if you are approved for the Affordable Connectivity Program program, we do not. You can continue receiving free internet each month while the program continues its existing funding,” said the company representative. Only one monthly ACP service discount is allowed per household.
Get Connected Free is also offering a one-time co-pay to get a discount on a tablet or phone with a free sim card. With this program, households can avail of necessary services such as getting critical healthcare services, or have the capacity to continue work or find jobs, participate in online classes, and more.
According to the FCC, the Affordable Connectivity Program has served more than 11.5 million households, helping people across the country get crucial internet access. Applying online is easy.
